New Book ‘Peddlers of Hate’ Tracks the Rise of the KKK in Oregon

New Book ‘Peddlers of Hate’ Tracks the Rise of the KKK in Oregon New book, Peddlers of Hate: How the Ku Klux Klan Seized Power in 1920s Oregon, tracks the rise of the KKK in Oregon. The book was written by Portland journalist Steve Law and is a study of how the Klan became the state's dominant political force, harnessing xenophobia to take control of school boards and county commissions. The Klan had 60 chapters in Oregon and its top Klansman, Fred Gord, became the boss of the state in 1922. The main targets in Oregon were immigrants, who made up 13 percent of the population and were far more numerous than Oregon's Black community. The group's roots date back to the Civil War, when members formed a secret society in Pulaski, Tennessee. The KKK disbanded in 1871 and was revived by an Atlanta insurance salesman.
