Portland is a great place to be if you’re a sushi lover. Yelp has released its annual list of the top 100 sushi spots, and three Portland-area restaurants made the cut, including one in the top 10.
Portland’s Yoshi’s Sushi (3530 S.W. Multnomah Blvd., 503-833-2940) took the No. 7 spot on Yelp’s list. This food cart in Multnomah Village’s The French Quarter is run by chef-owner Yoshimasa Ikeda and only takes orders by phone. Yelp says the most popular dishes are the spicy tuna roll, hotate (seared sea scallop nigiri topped with house-made yuzu pepper marmalade), and the lime green roll (sesame crusted spinach, cucumber, roasted pepper, avocado, micro green sala and ginger miso.)
Beaverton’s Koya Sushi (12570 S.W. First St.) is No. 24 on Yelp’s list, and Bluefin Tuna & Sushi (1337 N.E. Broadway) in Portland took the No. 75 spot.
And there’s a fourth entry from Oregon on Yelp’s list. Tekkamaki Sushi (2105 Roberts Rd.) in Medford is No. 80.
Here’s what our restaurant critic Michael Russell has to say about the rankings:
My sense is these Yelp ratings take several aspects into consideration — friendliness, affordability, etc. — that you might not find in some hoity-toity guide to the $500-per-person sushi restaurants in New York or Los Angeles.
That’s great. And it’s also why a food cart that takes its raw fish seriously like Yoshi’s can land so high on a guide to the best sushi in America. Yoshi’s was one of our favorite new food carts of 2019, and it landed on our comprehensive guide to Portland’s best sushi last year. We’ve also had good meals at the other two spots on the list, Koya and Bluefin Tuna & Sushi.
Sushi, like wine, is a luxury good that quickly scales out of reach for most consumers. That’s why we structured our own sushi guide into categories including “Inexpensive Sushi,” “Party Sushi,” “Everyday Omakase” and more. If you’re looking for a roundup written by a restaurant critic with wide-ranging sushi experience who has actually visited every place on the list, check out our guide to Portland’s best sushi.
If you want to hit all the Pacific Northwest entries on Yelp’s top 100 list, Washington has some places for you to try. No. 4 Taneda Sushi in Kaiseki in Seattle has just two nightly seatings at its nine-seat sushi bar. It flies in seafood from Japan’s Toyoshu Fish Market three times a week. There’s also No 14. Sushi Kaunta in Kent, No. 20 Gen Sushi in Battle Ground, No. 89 Maxi Teriyaki and Sushi Restaurant in Cosmopolis, No. 94 Star Sushi & Bar in Seattle and No. 98 Kai Sushi in Everett.
And if you want a taste of the very best sushi in the country, according to Yelp, you’ll need to hop on a plane or take a very long boat ride. The No. 1 spot belongs to Kauai Sushi Station in Lihue, Hawaii. Yelp calls it a fine-dining food truck and says it’s most popular dishes are the spicy tuna roll, ginger crazy roll and soft shell crab tempura roll.
