New this week to Portland, Ore. residents, batteries can now be placed in curbside recycling bins.

Select residents of the town can put their old batteries in a one-quart bag and set it out with their glass recycling, making battery recycling easier for them and safer for haulers. The program was rolled out in the city on Monday this week.

According to the Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, the new program should help cut down on the amount of battery-related fires caused at recycling and waste facilities.
