Five Ways WW Changed Portland in 2025
Here’s how Portland changed in 2025 because of our stories. The Portland newspaper, WW, has reported that good journalism changed the city of Portland by little by little, thanks to its reporters who highlighted abuses of powerful individuals in power. The stories led to significant changes in the city, including the creation of seismic upgrades as a top priority in the school district's $1.8 billion bond measure and the prioritization of earthquake safety over maintenance spending. The Oregon Secretary of State’s Office highlighted four examples of wasteful spending by preschool providers bankrolled with state dollars, but did not name the four providers. The director of preschool and early learning at Multnomah County, Leslee Barnes, resigned within 48 hours of the state's ethics rules after the scandal was discovered. The City Council wrested the enforcement division from Urban Forestry and Cairo in June, allowing the department to become an enforcement arm for one official, Jenn Cairo. The number of homeless people in Portland has tripled in five years to 114, and the number of massage parlors has tripled to 114.
