PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Downtown Portland’s Ace Hotel has rebranded under the name it initially donned over a century ago.

Last week, the former Ace Hotel relaunched as The Clyde: a nod to the Clyde Hotel that was once running in the same location. Hospitality company SOHI Brands, which formerly operated as Sortis Holdings, told KOIN 6 the establishment has left the Ace Hotel group — hence the name change.

SOHI is now partnering with fellow hospitality company Kasa in “revitalizing” the site. In a statement, Kasa Founder and CEO Roman Pedan said he’s excited about what the partnership will bring.

“Our goal is to bring exceptional guest experiences to life through innovative management and improving local partnerships,” Pedan said. “We look forward to contributing to Portland’s vibrant hospitality scene and building lasting connections with the community.”

KOIN 6 previously reported that SOHI, which runs other known brands like Bamboo Sushi and Sizzle Pie, ended its involvement with Portland cafe Wonderwood Springs. The decision resulted in the layoffs for employees who were told they could relocate to another business owned by the hospitality company or re-apply for the same role under new management.

But SOHI’s new partners have high hopes for leading The Clyde alongside the company.

“Working with the SOHI team has been a pleasure, and we couldn’t be more excited about being chosen to steward this historic hotel into its next era,” Kasa Head of Hotel Investments Luke Callinan said in a statement.

The original Clyde Hotel opened in 1912. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places later in 1994, due to its local significance as one of the few historic hotels that remained a hotel and didn’t undergo extensive renovations.

The site became the Ben Stark Hotel in 1987, and the Ace Hotel later in 2005 after being acquired by the hospitality group.

It is still located at 1022 SW Stark St. — although it was renamed to Harvey Milk Street in 2018 to honor the late LGBTQ+ rights activist.
