South Portland City Council discusses air quality reports from around petroleum tanks
The City of South Portland will discuss air quality reports during Tuesday night’s city council meeting. The City of South Portland is set to discuss air quality reports from around petroleum tanks, following years of monitoring. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has found elevated levels of a known human carcinogen around some tanks. The DEP report found that at least one monitoring site at nine of the city's 11 petroleum tank facilities recorded average benzene levels up to 2.5 times the state limit. Another facility, South Portland Terminal LLC, was an additional area where benzene was found to be 4.5times higher than the state limits. The state agencies plan to continue monitoring between the petroleum terminals and nearby neighborhoods to see how benzene and other chemical levels change closer to homes. Additionally, the city council will vote on an emergency ordinance banning city employees from working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
